What Our Students Say

Real stories from students who achieved their dream of studying abroad with our guidance and support.

“I received the MEXT Research Scholarship through StudyJapan Nepal's guidance. Their counselors helped me write my research proposal on seismic engineering and connected me with a professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology. I passed the Embassy exams and interview on my first attempt. Now I am a fully funded PhD student with a monthly stipend of 145,000 yen. My tuition is covered, flights were paid, and I have no financial stress. Japan's research facilities are world-class. I cannot thank StudyJapan Nepal enough.”

“I came to Japan through a language school in Osaka arranged by StudyJapan Nepal. I had no Japanese knowledge when I arrived, but after 18 months of intensive study, I passed JLPT N2 and scored well on the EJU exam. I then entered Osaka University's Faculty of Engineering with a 50% tuition reduction scholarship. The language school pathway was the right choice for me — it gave me time to adjust to Japan and build my Japanese foundation. I now work part-time at a konbini and my Japanese colleagues are amazed at how fluent I have become.”

“I got the MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship with help from StudyJapan Nepal. The application process took almost a year — written exams, interview, and then waiting for university placement. I was placed at Kyoto University for a 5-year program: 1 year of Japanese language training followed by 4 years of undergraduate study in Environmental Science. Everything is covered — tuition, 117,000 yen monthly stipend, and flights. Kyoto is a beautiful city and the university atmosphere is incredible. StudyJapan Nepal's exam preparation tips were crucial for passing the Embassy screening.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to study in Japan from Nepal?
Japan is one of the most affordable developed countries for education. National university tuition is JPY 535,800/year (approximately NPR 500,000/year) — far less than Australia, USA, or UK. Private university tuition ranges from JPY 800,000-1,500,000/year. Language school fees are JPY 700,000-900,000/year. Living costs are JPY 80,000-130,000/month depending on the city (Tokyo is most expensive, regional cities like Fukuoka and Sapporo are cheaper). With the MEXT scholarship, everything is free plus you receive a stipend. Even without a scholarship, Japan is affordable compared to other developed countries, especially with part-time work income.
Do I need to know Japanese to study in Japan?
It depends on your pathway. For Japanese-taught programs, you need JLPT N2 or higher. For English-taught programs (available at most major universities), Japanese is not required for admission — but basic Japanese makes daily life much easier. MEXT undergraduate scholars receive 1 year of Japanese language training before university. Language school students learn Japanese from zero. For research students applying through MEXT, the program can be conducted entirely in English if your supervisor agrees. We recommend learning at least basic Japanese (hiragana, katakana, basic greetings) before arriving.
What is the MEXT scholarship and how do I apply?
MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) is the Japanese Government scholarship. It covers full tuition, a monthly stipend of JPY 143,000-145,000 (research students), and round-trip airfare. There are two application routes: Embassy recommendation (apply through the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu, deadline April) and University recommendation (a Japanese university nominates you directly). The Embassy route involves written exams and an interview. Nepal selects approximately 20-30 MEXT scholars annually. It is competitive but very achievable with good preparation. We provide free guidance on the entire application process.
Can I work part-time while studying in Japan?
Yes. International students in Japan can obtain a 'Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted Under the Status of Residence Previously Granted' (commonly called a work permit) at the airport upon arrival or at your local immigration office. This allows you to work up to 28 hours per week during the semester and up to 8 hours per day during school breaks. Typical hourly wages are JPY 1,000-1,200 (NPR 900-1,100/hour). Common jobs include convenience stores (konbini), restaurants, factories, and delivery services. Part-time work income can cover most of your living expenses.
What is the visa process for studying in Japan from Nepal?
The Japan student visa process is straightforward with a high approval rate (over 95% for Nepali students with proper documentation). First, your Japanese school or university applies for a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) from Japanese immigration on your behalf — this takes 1-2 months. Once you receive the CoE, you apply for a student visa at the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu with the CoE, passport, application form, photos, and academic documents. Visa processing takes about 1-2 weeks. The entire process from school acceptance to visa typically takes 3-4 months. We guide you through every step.
