MEXT Research Scholarship
Fully funded Masters and PhD at Japan's top universities

The MEXT Research Scholarship is the most popular category of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship for Nepali students. It provides full funding for graduates to conduct research, pursue a Masters, or complete a PhD at Japanese universities. Research scholars receive the highest monthly stipend among all MEXT categories. Nepal consistently sends 15-20 research scholars to Japan annually through the Embassy recommendation route, with additional scholars selected through University recommendation.

MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship

The MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship provides full funding for Nepali students who have completed +2 (higher secondary education) to pursue a Bachelor's degree at a Japanese university. This is a 5-year scholarship: the first year is dedicated to intensive Japanese language and preparatory education at a designated preparatory school, followed by 4 years of undergraduate study at a Japanese university. It is the longest and one of the most comprehensive MEXT scholarship categories.

Japanese language schools (nihongo gakko) offer intensive Japanese language programs for international students in Japan. For Nepali students, language schools are the most accessible pathway to Japan — no prior Japanese knowledge is required. After 1-2 years of study, students typically achieve JLPT N2 or N1, which opens doors to Japanese universities, vocational schools, or direct employment. Over 800 approved language schools operate across Japan, and StudyJapan Nepal partners with reputable institutions in major cities.

JASSO Scholarship Programs

The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers scholarship programs for international students studying in Japan. Unlike MEXT which is a full scholarship, JASSO provides a monthly stipend to supplement your existing funding. The most common JASSO program for Nepali students is the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship (Learning Incentive Grant), which provides JPY 48,000/month to privately funded international students with excellent academic records. JASSO also operates the Student Exchange Support Program for short-term exchange students.

Japan's private universities offer some of the most accessible scholarship opportunities for Nepali students. Unlike government scholarships which have strict quotas, private university scholarships are awarded by the universities themselves based on academic merit, and many offer English-taught programs. Top private universities like Waseda, Keio, Ritsumeikan, Sophia, and others have dedicated international student scholarships covering 30-100% of tuition. Combined with JASSO and part-time work, private university education in Japan can be remarkably affordable.
