MEXT Research Scholarship

Fully funded Masters and PhD at Japan's top universities

The MEXT Research Scholarship is the most popular category of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship for Nepali students. It provides full funding for graduates to conduct research, pursue a Masters, or complete a PhD at Japanese universities. Research scholars receive the highest monthly stipend among all MEXT categories. Nepal consistently sends 15-20 research scholars to Japan annually through the Embassy recommendation route, with additional scholars selected through University recommendation.

Meeting these requirements strengthens your application. Our counselors can help you identify areas to improve and present the strongest possible profile.

  • Nepali citizen (must not hold Japanese citizenship)
  • Born on or after April 2, 1991 (under 35 years old as of April 2026)

Application Process

We have streamlined the study abroad application process into clear, manageable steps. Our team guides you through each stage to maximize your chances of admission.

1

Prepare Research Proposal

The Field of Study and Research Plan is the most important document. Write a clear, specific proposal explaining your research topic, methodology, expected outcomes, and why Japan is the right place for this research. Ideally, reference specific Japanese professors and their work. We provide free guidance on research proposal writing.

2

Collect & Submit Documents to Embassy

Gather application form, research proposal, academic transcripts (all degrees), graduation certificate, 2 recommendation letters from academic supervisors, passport photos, and medical certificate. Submit to the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu by mid-April deadline.

3

Written Examinations

Take Embassy exams in May: English proficiency (reading, writing, comprehension), Japanese language (basic level — attempt even if beginner), and a subject-specific exam in your research field. Past papers may be available at the Embassy upon request.

4

Embassy Interview

If you pass written exams, attend the Embassy interview in June. A panel evaluates your research plan, motivation, knowledge of Japan, adaptability, and communication skills. Prepare to explain your research clearly to non-specialists and articulate why Japan is specifically suited for your work.

5

MEXT Screening & University Placement

The Embassy nominates successful candidates to MEXT Tokyo by August. MEXT reviews nominations from all embassies worldwide and places scholars at Japanese universities based on research interests (September-January). Having a prior connection with a professor significantly helps placement.

6

Final Selection & Departure

Final results are announced February-March. Successful scholars arrange departure, attend pre-departure orientation, and arrive in Japan in April to begin their research.

Costs & Scholarships

Understanding the financial commitment is crucial for planning your study abroad journey. Here is a breakdown of typical costs and available funding options.

Tuition Range
JPY 0 (fully covered)

National university standard tuition of JPY 535,800/year and admission fee of JPY 282,000 are fully covered. If placed at a private university, MEXT covers the equivalent of national university fees, with many private universities waiving any remaining balance.

Scholarships
This IS the scholarship

MEXT Research Scholarship is fully funded. Additional income: you can work part-time up to 28 hours/week (JPY 1,000-1,200/hour). Some universities offer additional research grants. MEXT scholars may also receive a regional allowance of JPY 2,000-3,000/month if studying in designated areas.

Costs are estimates and vary by university and city. Call +977-9849998031 or fill out the form for personalized cost estimates based on your preferred universities.

Student Life

Studying abroad is about more than just academics. Here is what you can expect from life as an international student.

MEXT research scholars enjoy a privileged position in Japanese academia. You have access to world-class laboratories, libraries, and research equipment. Japanese universities invest heavily in research infrastructure, and as a funded researcher, you have access to resources that would be impossible to find in Nepal.

Your supervisor (sensei) plays a central role in your academic life. The professor-student relationship in Japan is closer than in many Western countries. Your supervisor guides your research, helps you navigate university life, and often assists with job placement after graduation. Building a strong relationship with your supervisor is crucial.

The Nepali community of MEXT scholars in Japan is tight-knit and supportive. There are informal networks, LINE groups, and gatherings where scholars share advice on research, university life, and practical matters. Many Japanese universities also have international student tutors and buddy systems to help you settle in.

MEXT Research Scholarship — Frequently Asked Questions

What research fields are available for MEXT Research Scholarship?
MEXT Research Scholarship covers virtually all academic fields: engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical, computer, chemical), sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science, mathematics), medicine and health sciences, agriculture, social sciences, humanities, economics, law, education, and arts. Japan is particularly strong in engineering, materials science, robotics, disaster science, environmental science, and biotechnology. Your chosen field must be something you studied at the undergraduate/graduate level.
Should I contact a Japanese professor before applying?
For the Embassy recommendation route, contacting a professor is not required but highly recommended. If a professor expresses interest in supervising you, mention this in your application — it significantly increases your chances of being selected and placed at your preferred university. For the University recommendation route, having a professor's agreement is essential since the university must nominate you. Search university websites for professors in your field, read their papers, and send a professional email introducing yourself and your research interests.
Can I extend my MEXT scholarship from Masters to PhD?
Yes. MEXT research scholars who complete a Masters can apply for a scholarship extension to continue to PhD at the same or different university. The extension is not automatic — you must apply through your university, and your supervisor's recommendation is critical. You also need to pass the PhD entrance exam. Most scholars who maintain good academic standing and wish to continue are approved. The total funded period for Masters + PhD can be up to 5 years.
What is the success rate for Nepali applicants?
The Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu typically receives 200-400 applications for the Research Scholarship category. Of these, approximately 15-20 are selected each year, giving a success rate of roughly 5-10%. The written exams are the biggest filter — about 30-50% of applicants pass. Of those who reach the interview, about 40-60% are selected. Strong preparation for both the exams and the research proposal significantly improves your odds.
Do I start directly in a Masters/PhD program?
Not always. Many MEXT research scholars start as 'Research Students' (kenkyusei) for 6-12 months. During this period, you take courses, conduct preliminary research, and prepare for the university's entrance examination for the Masters or PhD program. Once you pass the entrance exam, you officially enroll in the degree program. The research student period counts within your scholarship duration. Some scholars with strong profiles may skip the research student phase and enter the degree program directly.
